  • The Bible is the Word of God; fully inspired and without error. It is the supreme and final authority for all matters of Christian life and belief.

  • There is one true and living God, who eternally exists in three persons—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—who are equal in every divine perfection and who execute distinct but harmonious offices in all the work of the Godhead.

  • Man was created by God in His own image, but, through his sin, incurred physical and spiritual death. As a result, all people are separated from God by their sin, lost, and without hope apart from salvation in Christ.

  • The Gospel is the good news of God’s saving actions towards sinners through Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ, the eternal son of God, took on human nature, lived a sinless life, and died a substitutionary death for sinners.

  • Salvation is a free gift that comes only by God’s grace, through faith in Jesus Christ. Anyone who turns from their sin and trusts in Jesus Christ and His death on their behalf receives forgiveness of sins and the gift of eternal life
  • The Holy Spirit works progressively to transform genuine believers more and more into the image of Christ. His work is carried on in our hearts through such appointed means as the study of Scripture, prayer, worship, and fellowship with other believers. The Holy Spirit empowers believers for Christian witness and service. He also gives gifts for the building up of the body of Christ, the church.

  • The universal Church, composed of genuine followers of Christ, exists to worship, serve, and glorify God. All members of the universal Church are to be vitally committed members of a local church, where they receive pastoral care and the opportunity to employ their God-given gifts in His service

  • Jesus Christ will return to the earth, personally and visibly, to establish His kingdom. We believe in the bodily resurrection of both the saved and the lost—the saved to endless joy, living and reigning with Christ, and the lost to endless punishment away from the benevolent presence of God.

Is Your Church Healthy? https://pv.westsideinfo.com/is-your-church-healthy/ https://pv.westsideinfo.com/is-your-church-healthy/#comments Fri, 03 Feb 2017 17:52:51 +0000 https://pv.westsideinfo.com/?p=5732
Many of today’s church leaders flock to church growth seminars. I believe that it would be wiser to concentrate on church health and here’s why:

Hey Westside!

Wow !!  Is it really possible to be part of a strong, healthy, local church?  I believe that it not only “is” possible but that it is imperative for each one of us as believers in Christ.

What are the characteristics of a strong, healthy, local church?  (I’m glad you asked.)  Let’s take a look at a healthy church from the New Testament.

The Jerusalem church experienced both qualitative and quantitative growth. Eager for this same result, many of today’s church leaders flock to church growth seminars. I believe that it would be wiser to concentrate on church health. Why?

Because it is the nature of healthy organisms to grow.

When a local church emphasizes:
  • Jesus – first and foremost
  • strong, God honoring worship
  • solid biblical teaching
  • in an atmosphere of true fellowship
  • mixed with consistent outreach and evangelism

                    it will be healthy !!

. . . and a healthy Christian community will naturally (and super-naturally) attract people to Christ.

We need to all ask ourselves these questions:

• What am I doing to make Westside a healthy place that will draw others to Jesus?
• Do I have healthy relationships with all those people I personally know at Westside?
• Do I always seek to forgive, speak words of life and solve issues according to The Matthew 18 Principle?
• How am I using my gifts to serve others so that God will get the glory?
• Am I listening to  . . . and obeying God in all areas of my life right now?

Having a strong, healthy, local church is possible because Jesus said that He would build His church.  But no one ever said it would be easy.  Let’s all do our part in this greatest of endeavors.  Come on Westside . . . I know you can do it !

“With man things are impossible,
but with God, all things are possible !”

Love you guys,
Steve

Devoting Themselves To Prayer https://pv.westsideinfo.com/devoting-themselves-to-prayer/ https://pv.westsideinfo.com/devoting-themselves-to-prayer/#comments Thu, 19 Jan 2017 23:15:25 +0000 https://pv.westsideinfo.com/?p=5693
This is a true story of when I was in the Army:    In the summer of 1973, it was almost dusk on a deserted country road in Germany.  After several failed hitch-hike attempts to return to our base before curfew, my buddies and I were becoming rather nervous about getting in trouble . . .
. . . for being late.  We were out in the middle of nowhere and we would not make it back in time if we continued walking.  At last one lone car approached and it was then that I decided to make a final desperate and dramatic plea.  I got down on my knees, begged and pleaded, clasped my hands together, and looked toward heaven in a feign of absolute humility.  Miraculously, the car stopped and as we ran up from behind, I saw the bumper sticker:

          “Prayer Never Fails.”

As believers in Christ, we must remember that the early church was marked by its’ passion for persistent prayer.  God used the newborn believers in amazing ways because they absolutely and totally depended on His Holy Spirit for their guidance, strength, wisdom, and power to be His witnesses.

I urge each of us to be as dependent on Him today as our church leaders were.  How do we do this?  Let me give you a few suggestions:
  • Get up a bit EARLIER each day and enjoy that first cup of coffee or tea just sitting there in His presence
    • because “in His presence is fullness of joy.” Psalm 16:11
  • Work on being AWARE of God’s closeness to you every waking moment – close enough for you to hear His whispers
    • because we are commanded to “pray without ceasing.”  I Thess 5:17
  • Try to have a thankful heart BEFORE you start asking Him for stuff
    •  because we are instructed to “enter His courts with thanksgiving in our heart and into his courts with praise.”  Psalm 100:4
  • Make sure you are CLEAR before Him having all of your sin confessed
    • because He promised “if you confess your sin He will forgive you completely.”  I John 1:9
  • Ask Him for the WISDOM you need for each day
    • because He said He will give us wisdom if we ask for it.”  James 1:5
  • Pray alone, with your family, AND also gather together often to pray with other believers
    • because we see the early church do the same thing by “devoting themselves to prayer.”  Acts 2:42

Keep it up friends – you can live a victorious life and be an effective witness of the good news in your sphere of influence.  Represent Jesus well – not in your own strength – but in the strength found only in Him!

Love you guys,

Steve 🙂

P.S.  See you at “All Church Prayer” each 1st Wednesday at 6:30

Keep Your Focus On Jesus This Christmas https://pv.westsideinfo.com/keep-your-focus-on-jesus-this-christmas/ https://pv.westsideinfo.com/keep-your-focus-on-jesus-this-christmas/#comments Fri, 09 Dec 2016 21:27:45 +0000 https://pv.westsideinfo.com/?p=5620
I heard a story about a woman who was doing her last-minute Christmas shopping at a crowded mall. She was tired of fighting the crowds. She was tired of standing in lines. She was tired of fighting her . . .
. . . way down long aisles looking for a gift that had sold out days before. Her arms were full of bulky packages when the elevator door opened. It was full.

The occupants of the elevator grudgingly tightened ranks to allow a small space for her and her load. As the doors closed she blurted out, “Whoever is responsible for this whole Christmas thing ought to be arrested, strung up, and shot!” A few others nodded their heads or grunted in agreement. Then, from somewhere in the back of the elevator came a single voice that said, “Don’t worry. They already crucified him.”

It’s so easy to lose our focus in the middle of the busiest time of the year. Here’s a novel thought . . .

Let’s keep our focus on Jesus more than ever this Christmas.

John the apostle reminds us about just who Jesus is:

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men. . . . 14  And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
  John 1:1-4, 14

We really can keep Jesus first this season – and every season. So, I’ve got some very practical ideas for you to:

Keep Your Focus Jesus This Christmas

  • Get up a little earlier in the morning, at least once a week and read about the very first Christmas. Share these verses with your family.  Matthew 1:18 through 2:12  Luke 1:26-45
  • Enjoy Christmas music in your home while decorating, cooking, cleaning or wrapping gifts.
  • Watch “A Charlie Brown Christmas” together with your family.  This cartoon by Charles Schultz is one of the few Christmas TV shows to directly deliver the gospel message.
  • Take a plate of Christmas goodies to a lonely neighbor.
  • Give Christmas cards with a message about Jesus Birth instead of a silly joke or anecdote.
  • Wish a “Merry Christmas” to every sales clerk you come into contact with.
  • Throughout the holiday season, give your family the gift of a sweet disposition.
  • Finally, reflect on HIS Gift every day.
Enjoy the season, the decorations, the festivities, and the culture of generosity but, focus more on the birth of Christ than anything else. His gift to us is the greatest ever!

John 3:16

For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son,
so that everyone who believes in him
will not perish but have eternal life.

Merry Christmas everyone!

Steve 🙂

A Thankful Heart https://pv.westsideinfo.com/a-thankful-heart/ https://pv.westsideinfo.com/a-thankful-heart/#comments Fri, 18 Nov 2016 23:13:15 +0000 https://pv.westsideinfo.com/?p=5568
While we certainly have much to be thankful for, I am often amazed at the general lack of gratitude in our culture. So, instead of spouting off about the widespread
unthankfulness so prevalent today, I will just share with you some of what the Bible has to say about being a thankful people:

We are thankful because He deserves it.

Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever!

Psalm 118:1

We are thankful because it helps keep us on the right track.

Yes, they knew God, but they wouldn’t worship him as God or even give him thanks. And they began to think up foolish ideas of what God was like. As a result, their minds became dark and confused.

Romans 1:21

We are thankful because it is not all about us.

You should know this, Timothy, that in the last days there will be very difficult times. 2  For people will love only themselves and their money. They will be boastful and proud, scoffing at God, disobedient to their parents, and ungrateful. They will consider nothing sacred. 3  They will be unloving and unforgiving; they will slander others and have no self-control. They will be cruel and hate what is good. 4  They will betray their friends, be reckless, be puffed up with pride, and love pleasure rather than God. 5  They will act religious, but they will reject the power that could make them godly. Stay away from people like that!

2 Timothy 3:1-5

We are thankful because it helps us to think clearly.

Devote yourselves to prayer with an alert mind and a thankful heart.

Colossians 4:2
We are thankful because it helps our hearts to be at peace with God and with others.

And let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts. For as members of one body you are called to live in peace. And always be thankful. 16  Let the message about Christ, in all its richness, fill your lives. Teach and counsel each other with all the wisdom he gives. Sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs to God with thankful hearts.

Colossians 3:15-16

We are thankful because it reminds us that He is God and He does amazing things.

I will give thanks to the LORD with my whole heart; I will recount all of your wonderful deeds.
Psalm 9:1

During this Thanksgiving season, let’s recount all the wonderful works of the Lord and give Him the glory He deserves!

Sure do love you guys . . .

Steve  🙂

Here are 10 practical ways to share our thankful hearts:

Idea #1 – Read a Thanksgiving Story

Set aside a few moments on Thanksgiving Day to sit down together and read a Thanksgiving story.

Idea #2 – Write a Thanksgiving Poem

Take on a family project of writing a Thanksgiving poem together.

Idea #3 – Share Thanksgiving Quotes

Ask each family member to share a favorite Thanksgiving quote or a Bible verse before the Thanksgiving meal.

Idea #4 – Remember Thanksgivings Past

During Thanksgiving dinner, ask each family member to share a favorite Thanksgiving memory.

Idea #5 – Celebrate With Thanksgiving Communion

Plan a time of Communion on Thanksgiving to give thanks by remembering Jesus’ life, death and resurrection.

Idea #6 – Pay Forward a Thanksgiving Blessing

Give a grocery store gift card to a single parent or a struggling family. Fill up a college student’s gas tank. Take a piece of pie to someone in a nursing home. The possibilities are endless, so put on your collective thinking caps and get ready to be blessed in return.

Idea #7 – Let others know that you are thankful for them

Phone, text, email your loved ones or friends and let them know how grateful you are for them being a part of your life.

Idea #8 – Give a Thanksgiving Offering

Bring a Thanksgiving offering designated for a needy family.

Idea #9 – Undertake a Thanksgiving Adoption

Invite a widow, single person, family, or someone who is lonely to share in your family Thanksgiving meal.

Idea #10 – How about giving thanks on Thanksgiving?

Remember to Whom we give our thanks. The Bible says that every good gift comes from God.

A Grateful Heart:
A Steve’s Blog Classic
Originally Posted on 6/17/11

I will always remember the day my brother and I became men. Paul was about 10 years old and I was 12. We were playing in the front yard on a typically beautiful Saturday morning at the house where we lived in Santa Barbara. My dad was working in the garage with his new radial arm saw from Sears when all of a sudden there came a heart stopping, thunderous cry of “ahhhh”. . . . . .  and the sound of crashing boards that halted us in mid play.

Stunned, we fixed our eyes on each other. Something was wrong. I can see it so clearly now, my dad being thrown backwards several steps where we could see him for a moment before he darted back into the garage and out of our view to unplug the still spinning saw. Then, we watched our dad running from the open garage to the front door of our house while cradling his right arm to his chest.

From inside the house we heard a loud wail from our grandmother. Almost immediately she burst out of the front door with purse and keys in hand moaning something about: “his fingers – his fingers.” Dad was following right behind her with his hand wrapped in an increasingly red-drenched bathroom towel. But, instead of getting into the car, he marched over to the garage door and shut it. Then, as he walked to the car he looked at us and said: “stay out.” We didn’t argue.

No words were spoken by my brother or me. We were still frozen in place on the front lawn watching the unfolding scene, eyes wide, mouths dropped open, in surreal slow motion. At last, the car disappeared screeching around the corner. This all happened in less than 90 seconds. To us, it seemed like an hour.

Our dad lost two fingers and the use of a third that day.

My brother Paul and I, still looking at each other, took a deep breath, and let out a long sigh. Our shoulders relaxed a bit, we stood up straight, and slowly looked toward . . . the . . . garage . . . Then I said: “well, we’d better go look.”

We crept in the back door of the darkened garage, strips of light coming through the double door cracks. With eyes wide open, we were searching ever so slowly . . . for . . . “the fingers.” There was no Alfred Hitchcock music playing in the background, but there might as well have been. I’m not sure why we didn’t just turn the light on. I guess it wouldn’t have been as much of an adventure.

Then, we both spotted “it” at the same moment. Simultaneously, we “jumped a 180” and ran screaming for the door like a couple of kids running from a monster. I pushed my brother through the door and we both tumbled to the ground, shrieking, grossed out, and laughing all at the same time. We did it. We were men.

Here’s the thing. The Sunday before this, my dad had preached on the text from Romans that says: “All things work together for good to those who love God and are called according to His purpose.” All the way to the hospital the words kept going through his mind: “all things work together for good . . . all things work together for good.” He said later that it was those words that kept him going, that kept him encouraged. It was a painful recovery process. But he didn’t let the ordeal get him down.

Thinking back years later, I’m not quite sure of all the things that “worked out for good.” But I know they did. My dad wasn’t perfect . . . none of us are. But he softened a bit I think. He loved people and he and my mom would always welcome guests into our home. Many a teenager without a decent home life sat at our table. They were welcome to just “hang out.”

On the day in 2002 when he passed into the arms of Jesus, there were over thirty of us kids and grandkids crowded into his room singing his favorite hymns. Do we all have struggles? You bet. Do we all need to mature a bit? Yep. Have things worked out for the good of those who love Him? Without a doubt.

How about you? Have you trusted God to take the stumbling blocks in your life and turn them into stepping stones? Have you kept your heart pure and free from bitterness? Have you been able to keep pressing forward in spite of the storm? If you are right smack dab in the middle of a big trial, trust Him. His Word is true. He is faithful. He will carry you in the toughest times. I know it. I’ve seen it. I’ve lived it.

Keep looking forward, I’m standing with you.
Love you guys,
Steve

Romans 8:28 (MSG)
That’s why we can be so sure that every detail in our lives of love for God is worked into something good.

Proverbs 4:23 (NLT)
Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.

P.S. I suppose it’s been the season for me to reflect on some turning points in my life. I have been recalling some great moments in my childhood that made an impact on me and changed the direction of my life. Last time it was “my brother the hero.” This time it is “my dad the hero.” Next time it will be “Jesus my hero.” See you then.

doty-no-u-turn

I love this picture of my friends Russ and Mary Doty. I took this photo on the Golden Gate Bridge and I noticed the sign in the background, so I made sure it got in the shot as well. You see . . . when this was taken, Russ and Mary had just . . .
handed over the leadership of a very healthy church they planted in Australia, sold their home, and left their adult children to come to America and plant a church. For them . . . there was no turning back. There was no “U-Turn.” They were literally “all in” for the Kingdom.

Not too long ago on a Sunday, as we were worshiping the Lord, I had the most wonderful picture drop into my spirit. Flashing across my mind’s eye, I saw literally scores and scores of faces of the people at Westside. Your faces, your families. I had all at once and at the same time; an overwhelming feeling of gratitude to God, a deep appreciation for all of the sacrifices our folks have made to serve the body, memories of me having the privilege of marrying some of you, burying some of your loved ones, traveling on road trips to Equips and ministry trips, eating in your homes, celebrating your successes, and walking with you through your life-trials. I saw; joy, laughter, tears, baptisms, graduations, dancing, softball, picnics, flat tires, new babies, new believers, new marriages, new careers, and new dreams birthed.

While I was fixed on Jesus and enjoying this picture, I heard God clearly say:

“You (Westside) are not finished yet.  I have more for you to do.”

Wow!  That’s exciting, you’ve gotta admit that!

God has more for us to do!

Friends, we’re in this for the long haul. Teri and I have never been more excited about what’s ahead for Westside!  My prayer is that we will be a people who:
  • will not give up,
  • will not look back,
  • and will remain faithful!

Friends, please fight to keep your passion for Jesus,
  • keep loving people,
  • keep representing Him in your sphere of influence.
We are not quitting . . . and we are not turning back!

Philippians 3:12-14 (The Message) Paul speaking:

I’m not saying that I have this all together, that I have it made. But I am well on my way, reaching out for Christ, who has so wondrously reached out for me. Friends, don’t get me wrong: By no means do I count myself an expert in all of this, but I’ve got my eye on the goal, where God is beckoning us onward—to Jesus. I’m off and running, and I’m not turning back.

Love you Guys,
Steve  🙂

P. S.  Russ Doty will be ministering this coming weekend at Westside!

It Takes A Village To Make A Disciple https://pv.westsideinfo.com/it-takes-a-village-to-make-a-disciple/ https://pv.westsideinfo.com/it-takes-a-village-to-make-a-disciple/#comments Thu, 15 Sep 2016 22:01:38 +0000 https://pv.westsideinfo.com/?p=5366

A body reproduces a body.

A hand does not reproduce a body. Neither does an eye or a foot reproduce a body.

A healthy local church

made of healthy believers

reproduces healthy Christ followers.

Can just one person make a disciple? Sure, but not very many actually do that or are gifted enough to disciple one person from start to finish. Sadly, many believers give up on their mandate of discipling someone because they feel inadequate in doing so.

Speaking about the local church:
I believe that if each member of the whole body, working together in a spirit of unity, does its’ part in the process of pointing people to Jesus, leading people to Jesus, equipping, encouraging, building up and releasing them to do the same . . . then the whole body is involved in the process of disciple making.
  • Can you represent the love and generosity of Jesus at work or at school?
  • Can you raise your children to see God’s handiwork everywhere?
  • Can you lovingly lead them into a relationship with Jesus as their Lord and Savior?
  • Can you invite neighbors over for coffee or dinner and befriend them?
  • Can you learn to share your testimony in 90 seconds?
    • that might be all the time you have to plant a seed
  • Can you do the right thing in your business even if it may negatively affect your bottom line?
  • Can you hold a baby in the nursery so their exhausted mom and dad can hear the Word of God in the service?
  • Can you open your home, making it warm and inviting, and invite a leader to come in and lead a small group?
  • Can you make sure that you are growing in the Word so that you are taking personal responsibility for becoming more Christ like so you can be an example for others to follow?
  • Can you give sacrificially so that authentic ministry can continue in your local church and around the world?
  • Can you let your light so shine so that others can see your good deeds and give glory to your Father who is in heaven?
  • Can you do something, ANYTHING, to help someone take their next step in God?
    • if they don’t believe in God – to believe in God
    • if they don’t know Jesus – to believe in Jesus
    • if Jesus is not Lord – to make Him Lord
    • if He is Lord – to grow in Him
    • if they are growing in Him – to make Him known!
SURE YOU CAN . . .

It takes a healthy body to reproduce a body.

It takes a healthy church

made of healthy believers

to reproduce healthy Christ followers.

Make it your mission to be involved in the process of discipleship.

Discipleship is not a program, it is our life as believers. It is helping people to take their next step (of many steps) from being lost to becoming a fully functioning follower of Christ.

You can do it. I know you can!

Sure do love you guys,

Steve 🙂

After all, who is Apollos? Who is Paul? We are only God’s servants through whom you believed the Good News. Each of us did the work the Lord gave us.  6  I planted the seed in your hearts, and Apollos watered it, but it was God who made it grow. 7  It’s not important who does the planting, or who does the watering. What’s important is that God makes the seed grow.  8The one who plants and the one who waters work together with the same purpose. And both will be rewarded for their own hard work.   1 Corinthians 3:5-8

What? Me Worry? https://pv.westsideinfo.com/what-me-worry/ https://pv.westsideinfo.com/what-me-worry/#comments Thu, 14 Jul 2016 20:02:07 +0000 https://pv.westsideinfo.com/?p=5089

Too much stress is not a good thing.  What do you think about most?  What might you worry about …in the middle of the night or during the lonely daytime hours?  Is it something bad?  Is it guilt?  A difficult relationship or maybe deep regrets?  Is it a longing for something from the past or something you may never get in the future?  Is it constantly putting yourself under the load of unrealistic expectations?  What takes up most of your private thought life?  Does it cause you stress?

Too much tress can cause a lot of bad things.  Here are some of its’ bad effects:
• Headache
• Muscle tension or pain
• Chest pain
• Fatigue
• Change in sex drive
• Stomach upset
• Sleep problems
• Anxiety
• Restlessness
• Lack of motivation or focus
• Irritability
• Sadness or depression
• Overeating or under eating
• Angry outbursts
• Drug or alcohol abuse
• Tobacco use
• Social withdrawal
… just to name a few.

Prolonged and relentless stress is even worse!  God designed our bodies to adapt instantly and protectively to dangerous situations.  He never intended us to live in a constant state of tension and anxiety.  When we experience an imminent threat or danger, our hypothalamus region at the base of our brain instantly releases a cocktail of hormones that give our body the ability to think, act, and respond almost super-humanly.  If you have ever been the brunt of someone else’s joke and experienced a momentary fright you notice that your heart continues racing for a few minutes.  If quick thinking is needed to flee a fire, our body responds appropriately.

Adrenaline and Cortisol can be our friends in such situations.  But, if our minds and bodies are constantly on edge because of excessive stress, we may face serious health problems as a result.
Like:
• stopping healthy functions that wouldn’t really be needed in a fight-or-flight situation.
       – suppresses our immune systems,
       – suppresses the digestive system,
       – suppresses the reproductive system,
       – weakens our heart and vascular system
       – and much more!

Stress can mess us up!  God never designed us to live that way!

Do you know what the most repeated command in the Bible is?

Fear not.

Yep, that’s it.  Don’t be afraid.  It’s not, “try” not to be fearful or anxious.  It’s . . . “don’t be.”

Jesus said in Luke 12:22-28:
“That is why I tell you not to worry about everyday life—whether you have enough food to eat or enough clothes to wear. For life is more than food, and your body more than clothing. Look at the ravens. They don’t plant or harvest or store food in barns, for God feeds them. And you are far more valuable to him than any birds! Can all your worries add a single moment to your life? And if worry can’t accomplish a little thing like that, what’s the use of worrying over bigger things? “Look at the lilies and how they grow. They don’t work or make their clothing, yet Solomon in all his glory was not dressed as beautifully as they are. And if God cares so wonderfully for flowers that are here today and thrown into the fire tomorrow, he will certainly care for you.

A little further down He says:

“Wherever your treasure is,
there the desires of your heart will also be.”

You know what we’re really afraid of?  Whatever will take away our treasure . . .

• If we love life – we’re afraid of getting sick or dying.
• If we love stuff – we’re afraid of misplacing it or it getting stolen.
• If we love power – we’re afraid of becoming powerless.
• If we love fame – we’re afraid of losing it.
• If we love the admiration of people – we’re afraid of becoming unpopular or losing our good looks.
• If we are insecure – we are afraid of losing our friends, money, health, or anything that place our trust in.
• If we idolize our kids – we fear them growing up and leaving.
• If we love ourselves – we’re afraid of growing old.

Jesus said:  Fear not!  “Don’t be afraid my little ones.”

Jesus said that no one can take away our treasure that’s stored in heaven.  I love Eugene Peterson’s take on this passage in Luke:  “Be generous. Give to the poor. Get yourselves a bank that can’t go bankrupt, a bank in heaven far from bank robbers, safe from embezzlers, a bank you can bank on. It’s obvious, isn’t it?  The place where your treasure is, is the place you will most want to be.

Let’s be people whose treasure is being stored up in heaven!  Let’s be people who treasure the King and the Kingdom.  Let’s be people who are grateful for what we have and generous with others.  Let our hearts dwell in eternity!

Love you guys,
Steve  🙂

Hell Hole Singing https://pv.westsideinfo.com/hell-hole-singing-2/ https://pv.westsideinfo.com/hell-hole-singing-2/#comments Fri, 01 Jul 2016 20:51:45 +0000 https://pv.westsideinfo.com/?p=5056

The faint sounds of singing resonate through the pitch black night as you stoop down low and feel your way through roughly chiseled solid rock tunnels.  The air is heavy, damp, and overflowing with the stench of human misery, open sewage, and death.  You blindly approach the music, slowly moving past door after door.  Each within has it’s own distinct sounds of; pain, muffled anguish, the soft sliding of heavy chains, bitterness, or silence.  The obvious question emerges: “Why on earth would anyone be singing at midnight in the depths of this hell-hole?”

Get the picture?  (If you didn’t, please re-read the first paragraph.)

You’ve been told this story before you know . . .

Don’t remember?

It’s the story of Paul and Silas singing in prison after having been beaten and locked up for preaching the Gospel.  You can read all about it in Acts chapter 16.

Now, if I had just endured an unjust and severe flogging and then thrown into a cesspool of a jail I don’t know if I would then begin to sing out . . . “How great is our God, sing with me – how great – how great is our God.”

I think I would probably shout: “MEDIC !”  Then, call my lawyer and get the whole lawsuit thing going.  But sing?  You gotta be kidding me!

Why were Paul and Silas different?  Why did they sing in the middle of horrific pain and immeasurably gruesome circumstances?  Answer:

They trusted in God instead of themselves.

Do I do that?  Do you? I hope you do . . .

Here’s my point:

Why not take God at His Word

instead of always trying to do it our way

  • The Bible says that when we take our focus off our problem and worship God He will fight on our behalf.  Paul and Silas knew that and they trusted God.
  • The Bible says He is our provider.  Trust Him for that.
  • The Bible says to be anxious for nothing.  But instead, pray and give thanks.  Have you tried that lately?
  • The Bible says to honor your father and mother that it may go well with you.  How “well” is it going?
  • The Bible says to give and it will be given back to you, good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over.  Well . . . ?

“How on earth can we disregard God’s Word and either go our own way, or outright disobey and then expect Him to bless us?”

The Bible says that us men should love our wives as Christ loved the church and gave (i.e. died) Himself for her.  Are we doing that men?

The Bible says that from the abundance of the heart – the mouth speaks.  What’s in our hearts?  (answer: whatever we are worshipping)

The Bible says that we are to trust Him with all our hearts and acknowledge Him in all our ways and He WILL direct our paths.  Got direction?

What was the result of Paul and Silas’s obedience?  A few verses later the jailer (position of influence) invited Jesus to be his Lord and Savior . . . and his whole household!

Again, why do we expect Him to make exceptions for us?  Why do we do an “end run” around His ways and still expect His blessing?

  • How about looking to God first.
  • Pray first.
  • Put Him first.
  • Go to the Word first.

Instead of trusting in ourselves . . .  (the “creation” rather than the “Creator”)  let’s trust Him!

Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.

Matthew 6:33

Keep looking to Jesus!  Love you Guys,

Steve   🙂

Suggestion:  How about sharing in the comments section about a verse or Biblical truth that you’ve obeyed and then God came through?  Let’s share some good stuff that gives Him glory!
